Disaster prone Kwekwe will host the 2023 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction commemorations.
The day is meant to encourage building of more disaster-resilient communities.
Commemorated every 13 October, The United Nations General Assembly designated the day as part of its proclamation of International Decade for Disaster Reduction.
Kwekwe District Development Coordinator Mr Fortune Mpungu said preparations are in full swing.
“We were selected to host the national commemorations by the government in light of the number of disasters we have encountered,” he said.
Gold rich Kwekwe is prone to disasters owing to rampant illegal mining activities.
Recently, Globe and Phoenix Primary School had to be deserted after a classroom block gave into a mining tunnel injuring learners.
A few days later, a house within the same vicinity also sunk into an underground mining tunnel.
The choice of Kwekwe is expected to play a key role in building a more disaster resilient community and preserve lives.
