The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) gears up to host the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) in Nairobi, Kenya, from February 26th to March 1st, 2024.
UNEA-6, recognized as the principal global platform for environmental decision-making, is set to host over 70 Ministers and 3,000 delegates from across the world. With the theme “Effective, inclusive, and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution,” UNEA-6 underscores the critical need to confront pressing environmental challenges.
Amidst escalating climate change impacts and biodiversity loss, the assembly aims to foster unified, inclusive, and multilateral efforts to combat these intertwined crises. The upcoming session will witness deliberations on twenty draft resolutions and two draft decisions, spanning various environmental issues, involving ministers, intergovernmental organizations, civil society groups, scientists, and the private sector.
Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP, emphasized UNEA-6’s role in addressing the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, with a particular focus on the African continent.
Structured around six thematic areas, UNEA-6 seeks to promote effective, inclusive, and sustainable multilateral action, featuring leadership dialogues on finance, science, data, and digitalization, alongside a Youth Environment Assembly.
Beyond policy-setting, UNEA-6 signifies a concerted endeavour to mobilize global resources and political determination towards resolving the world’s environmental predicaments.
