The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has advised Zimbabweans to adopt recycling practices at all levels in order to preserve the environment from waste. The drive for a “recycling culture” aims to tackle waste buildup and protect the environment for the long term.
According to EMA widespread recycling initiatives, may drastically cut pollution and pave the way for a more sustainable future. Communities are being urged to repurpose outdated objects in novel ways, such as repurposing plastic bottles as bags or containers.
EMA spokesperson Amkela Sidange says the importance of recycling in creating a safe, clean, and healthy environment cannot be overstated adding that recycling is a key component in the attainment of the green economy.
She added that in partnership with communities EMA is establishing waste sorting centers which will also serve as buy-back locations, where waste that has been recovered from waste will be collected for recycling.
Pollution continues unabated in most cities with the capital city, Harare, having waste strewn all over the streets while heaps of garbage remain uncollected. This week, on the 18th of March 2024, Zimbabwe joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Recycling Day. The day was set aside to raise awareness on the importance of recycling and to encourage communities to take action in reducing waste and protecting the environment.
