Parliamentarians have been called upon to lead in climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives Speaker. Speaking during a climate change sensitization workshop held at the New Parliament Building in Mt Hampden, Speaker of Parliament Advocate Jacob Mudenda highlighted the impact of climate change on national development.
Advocate Mudenda said as leaders, Parliamentarians must confront the climate change phenomenon head-on being cognisant of the imperative that a climate change impoverished environment infringes on the right to development, the right to accelerated socio-economic growth and slows the pace to the attainment of Vision 2030
Addressing the newly elected representatives, Mudenda underscored their unique opportunity and responsibility to champion climate action adding that as newly elected legislators they have a unique opportunity and responsibility to champion the cause of climate action as you strive to work towards a sustainable future for our nation and the planet at large.
The speaker of Parliament said as a key institution on the demand side of accountability, Parliament exists to bridge the gap between decisions made at the global level and their national implementation response. Asserting the importance of environmental policies and laws, Mudenda urged MPs to ensure their effective implementation to safeguard natural resources for future generations.
He urged parliamentarians to hold all ministries, departments and agencies of government totally accountable for their actions and or inaction in the climate change impact response efforts.
