In a significant move to address the escalating concerns of climate change, the Ministry of ICT, led by Hon. Dr. Tatenda Mavetera, has partnered with the Ministry of Environment to develop a comprehensive e-waste policy. This initiative aims to tackle the environmental impact of electronic waste while leveraging ICTs to mitigate climate change.
Speaking at the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2024 in Madziva, themed “Innovation for Sustainable Development,” Minister Mavetera emphasized the importance of the policy in steering Zimbabwe towards a greener, more sustainable future. “We are working on an e-waste policy with the Ministry of Environment. This policy is a crucial step in addressing climate change and harnessing ICTs to engage in climate change mitigation,” she stated.
Minister Mavetera highlighted the necessity of using technology effectively to combat climate change. “It’s important for us to utilize our environment responsibly and develop policies that enhance the use of ICTs and artificial intelligence in climate change efforts,” she added.
She further explained the need for technological solutions to address the rapidly changing environment and the significant losses it incurs. The e-waste policy aims to mitigate these losses, especially for individuals, by promoting sustainable practices and reducing electronic waste.
The policy, currently in the drafting stage, has made substantial progress. To ensure its successful implementation, the ministry is conducting stakeholder consultations, cabinet committee reviews, and parliamentary portfolio committee debates. “The draft is already in place, but we need to complete stakeholder consultations and go through the necessary government processes,” Minister Mavetera noted.
This comprehensive approach signifies Zimbabwe’s commitment to a sustainable future, utilizing technology to address one of the most pressing issues of our time climate change.
